Born 15 weeks premature to musical parents in 1993, Rachel Flowers lost her sight as an infant but was blessed with perfect pitch. This film follows her for a few years when she is around 20, as opportunities begin to open up for her. Clearly a prodigy, she began playing piano by ear as a young child, expanding to flute, guitar, and whatever else someone might hand her. Her range is astonishing and includes classical music, jazz, and progressive rock. Viewers see her performing her own composition with a youth orchestra, later playing piano and flute simultaneously, and jamming with trumpeter, pianist, and composer Arturo Sandoval. The documentary concludes with Flowers performing with Zappa Plays Zappa.
VERDICT Why spend your library's money on a film about a relatively unknown musician? Come for the heartwarming story, stay to be dumbfounded by her talent, and relish her giggly sweetness.
